My Top Five Books of 2023

The year has finally come to an end meaning its time to round up the best books of the year. I have read quite a lot of books this year (27 books exact) and majority have been really good while the others have rather mediocre but overall a lot of it was positive this year. These five books were able to transport me to other world and dream and i know that these books will do the same to you.

Now lets get the ball rolling with these list and found out my favourite books of 2023

 5. “Black Girl Lostby Donald Goines

Black Girl Lost was the last book I read by Donald Goines, and man, was it impactful. The story focuses on a young girl named Sandra who faces a lot of adversity and trials while trying to find herself along the way. This book was brutal but was really realistic as to how it was back then, especially for a young black girl and what they had to endure living in near poverty. In addition to having a good pace, Donald Goines’ writing captures your interest and keeps it throughout the book. It’s a fantastic novel and book I will surely recommend.

4/5 Stars

 4. “The Agony and the Ecstasyby Irving Stone

If you are a big fan of art or of Michelangelo, in fact, then this book is for you. The Agony and the Ecstasy is a historical fiction novel that focuses on the art and life of Michelangelo. Since Michelangelo is my all-time favourite artist, I found reading this even more enjoyable because I’ve always been interested in his work. It was fascinating to read about his connections and how he created his artwork, such as the David statue and the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Irving Stone did an excellent job of detailing Michelangelo’s life and ultimately bringing him back to life in this novel.

4/5 Stars

 3. “The Wisdom of Crowds” by Joe Abercrombie

The Wisdom of Crowds was the last book of the the “Age of Madness” trilogy and I can honestly say that this book concluded the series on a Positive note. Joe Abercrombie cemented himself in the fantasy genre with the first law series and has made it one of the greatest fantasy series of all time. The Wisdom of Crowds demonstrated how brutal the world can be and the dangerous risk of trust. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones, then this series is for you.

4.5/5 Stars

 2. “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexandre Dumas

With almost a thousand pages, this was the longest book I have ever read, but wow, was it worth every page. The Count of Monte Cristo is a revenge tale about a man called Edmond Dantes who is framed and thrown in prison for a crime he did not commit. It then follows his retribution and recovery to attain his revenge. This novel is filled with drama, adventure, and even romance. Edmond is one of my favourite protagonists in fiction, he was truly an interesting character, and it was wonderful to watch how he developed. The book is a classic for a reason, so hurry up and pick this up when you can.

4.5/5 Stars

 1. “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Crime and Punishment is my book of the year. A masterpiece, this novel was spectacular from top to bottom. The novel follows a man named Rodion Raskolnikov, who commits a terrible murder without any remorse. Still, throughout the story, Guilt starts to pour onto him so much that it drives him crazy. He then tries to find redemption through a remarkable woman named Sonya, hoping to save him. The novel was excellent because it also had a philosophical element that made me reflect more on specific subjects such as religion, death, morality, and more. The novel was an experience an experience you want to experience. Fyodor Dostoevsky is one of the greatest writers of all time and this novel definitely shows why.
